Dredd trailer seems familiar

Dredd.jpgI just saw the trailer for Dredd, the new version of the Judge Dredd story in film from director Pete Travis and writer Alex Garland with Karl Urban as the new Dredd taking over from Sylvester Stallone's not as bad as everyone makes out Judge Dredd.

This new trailer makes me think of two other films, The Raid (Filmstalker review) and Max Payne, and I know I say I hate it when people compare new films to other films but I really couldn't help it here as the titles so obviously came to mind.

However that said it's not meant as an insult to Dredd, the styling here looks good and the idea of the two isolated Judges could provide for a strong story, especially as Dredd will have to take them all on more or less on his own.

Here's the blurb for the new Dredd film which stars Olivia Thirlby and Lena Headey along with the lead player Karl Urban.

The future America is an irradiated waste land. On its East Coast, running from Boston to Washington DC, lies Mega City One- a vast, violent metropolis where criminals rule the chaotic streets. The only force of order lies with the urban cops called "Judges" who possess the combined powers of judge, jury and instant executioner. Known and feared throughout the city, Dredd (Karl Urban) is the ultimate Judge, challenged with ridding the city of its latest scourge -- a dangerous drug epidemic that has users of "Slo-Mo" experiencing reality at a fraction of its normal speed.

During a routine day on the job, Dredd is assigned to train and evaluate Cassandra Anderson (Olivia Thirlby), a rookie with powerful psychic abilities thanks to a genetic mutation. A heinous crime calls them to a neighborhood where fellow Judges rarely dare to venture- a 200 story vertical slum controlled by prostitute turned drug lord Ma-Ma (Lena Headey) and her ruthless clan. When they capture one of the clan's inner circle, Ma-Ma overtakes the compound's control center and wages a dirty, vicious war against the Judges that proves she will stop at nothing to protect her empire. With the body count climbing and no way out, Dredd and Anderson must confront the odds and engage in the relentless battle for their survival.

The trailer for the new Dredd does look rather interesting and isn't trying to oversell itself.

I think that looks rather fun, and importantly, no Rob Schneider!

I had heard a number of times that Dredd and The Raid shared many similarities in plot. I fancied The Raid but was desperate to see Dredd more so gave the former a wide berth.

Watched Dredd on the ipad the other night. Best action film I've seen in a long long time. Very little flab in the 90 mins and felt like the original spirit of 2000AD. If I had a Blu-Ray player then I'd splash the cash on this one :)
