No Johnny Depp for Don Quixote?

JohnnyDepp.jpgEarly this year, Terry Gilliam said he was rewriting a script for Don Quixote. After a disastrous shoot saw his first attempt at making it fail, he was starting again. Albeit some nine years later.

We weren't sure if Johnny Depp, would be interested in taking up the role he was supposed to play all that time ago. But now someone has asked him just that.

Terry Gilliam's first attempt at filming The Man Who Killed Don Quixote ended in failure nine years ago. An injury to a cast member, and some flash floods, put paid to Gilliam's plans. Add in some problems over insurance payments, and that about sums it up I think.

In January this year though, he said he had started rewriting a script for it with Tony Grisoni. And was hopeful that the film would be better for the long delay. Back then Gilliam had Johnny Depp in the second lead role. And we wondered if he would be interested in finally getting to play that role.

Whilst promoting Public Enemies, Depp spoke to a group of reporters about the film. Here he is from Chud, through First Showing.net.

I love Terry and I'd do personally anything the guy wants to do. The thing with Quixote is that my dance card is pretty nutty for the next couple of years, so I'd hate to put him in a position to wait for me. That would be wrong.

It doesn't stop at schedules though. Depp may be a bit apprehensive even if he is free.

We went there and tried for something and whatever it was - the elements and whatever got up beneath us were there and were documented well in that film Lost in La Mancha. I don't know if it's right for me to go back there.

So a mixture of busy schedules, Depp has a long list of films in development. And also he's a bit unsure of heading back to something that went pretty badly in the first place.

Is there anyone else you can think of to fill Depp's shoes? Or should Terry Gilliam wait for him. Hey, he's waited nine years already.
