The Words trailer looks strong, sounds wrong
The Words is a film starring Bradley Cooper, Zoe Saldana, Jeremy Irons, Dennis Quaid, Olivia Wilde and J.K. Simmons, so already it's looking good. It's about a struggling writer who is just that, struggling, until he finds a story written by someone else and publishes it as his own. It brings success but the theft also brings a price.
I'm not sure how to take the trailer though, the light hearted first half and the musical choice for the second half don't present the strong drama and thriller I was expecting. It seems more like a romantic heart searching story.
Brian Klugman and Lee Sternthal co-wrote and co-directed the film, their first in each category although Sternthal is credited with the story for TRON: Legacy (Filmstalker review). The story itself sounds interesting and the suggestion from the trailer that the man whose story it actually was arrives in the main character's life to reveal his lies sets up a good story, but the rest of the trailer falls into a romantic drama trap from there on. The music, the images, it all seems to be far from the opening pitch and the blurb.
Have a look at the trailer which comes through Deadline to see what it says to you, because to me it's certainly not working. All it needed was a shot of Bradley Cooper with his top off and in bed, in two separate scenes, with Zoe Saldana and Olivia Wilde and we have a completely different story.
