I Spit on Your Grave remake

ISpitonYourGrave.jpgAmazingly the rights to I Spit on Your Grave have resided with the original writer and director since it was made, until now that is, and it's being remade.

The film tells the story of a woman who is abducted, brutally raped and abused and left for dead, except she's not. She survives and when she regains her strength she has one pirpose, to track down those that attacked her and subject them to similar torture and pain.

Yeah I know what you're thinking, I certainly am, you can see that the executives have been spurred on by Jodie Foster's The Brave One. What a way to see if a remake of this would work or not.

I Spit on Your Grave was a very controversial film when it came out, in the UK it was slapped with the term video nasty as so many films were, films that on viewing now seem completely tame.

Over on Variety one of the producers Paul Hertzberg said of the remake:

"After seeing what was done with an R rating on films like 'Saw' and 'Hostel,' we think we can modernize this story, be competitive with what this marketplace expects and not have to aim for an NC-17 or X rating..."

Yeah, I can see that they could do something with it, but in its day it was made on the back of the controversy and it's remained there ever since. The big question is if they can make a strong film out of it without resorting to the same level of controversy.

I think they can. The Brave One missed out at the cinema and I think there really is space for a story that has a strong female standing up for herself and doing what we see male characters doing all too often. However mishandle it and it could just turn out to be the latter half of Hostel: Part II.
